The 2004 Olympics: return to Athens

Viewers of the 2004 Summer Olympics saw an exciting assortment
of sporting events. Swimming, gymnastics, track and field,and soccer
are just a few of the numerous activities involved. The United States
competitors showed great potential. So far, America has five gold
medals, six silver, and six bronze. Michael Phelps, originally expected
to bring home eight gold medals, has won three of the five for the
U.S.
Although Bhardwaj and Hatch messed up in their first routine, they,
along with Patterson, have made it to the finals in gymnastics.
“The U.S. Women’s National Team has a very good chance
of winning the gold this year.” says senior Mary Essler.
The women’s soccer team is in first place and advanced to
the quarter finals with a 3-0 win over Greece, 2-0 over Brazil,
and a 1-1 tie with Australia. In a random poll of 15 students, 70%
of students are watching the Olympics as much as possible, while
20% are planning on watching it at some point. The Olympics began
on Aug. 13 and wll be plaing on NBC, as wel as NBC’s family
of networks includig Bravo, MSNBC, and CNBC.
Gold medal winners: Paul Hamm (Men’s Gymnastics, All-Around),
Michael Phelps (Men’s 100m Butterfly, Men’s 200m IM,
Men’s 4x200 Freestyle Relay, Men’s 4x100M Freestyle
Relay, Men’s 200m Freestyle, Men’s 400m IM), Kerri Walsh
and Misty May (Women’s Beach Volleyball), Natale Coughlin
(Women’s 100m Backstroke). The Women’s Gymnastics team
won the Women’s Gymnastics Competition silver, and the men
won silver in the Men’s Gymnastics Team Competition.
