New coach learns to swim

Katie Coe, Charger Staff

Expectations are high this year for the Cookeville High School swim team. The team now comes equipped with not only new coach John Boschung, but new assets and benefits. Previously, CHS was in a higher division that required rivaling more advanced schools. This year, the team is on a lower division level, allowing them to contend on a more equal level. “It should be an excellent season,” said coach Boschung. “It’s far less one-sided.”

Another benefit this year is that the team is now recruiting eighth graders. Although the young members cannot compete in meets until they reach high school, they will acquire a good idea of what is to come.
Boschung, an English teacher at CHS, takes on the task of coaching the team along side Deidre Scott. Just like any coach, he wants to make it all the way to State. With very experienced swimmers, that should be no problem. What does he personally hope to accomplish this season? “I hope they can teach me how to swim!” Boschung admits.

Although the season has not yet started, preparations are already underway. Swim team tryouts take place on Sept. 13th.
