New courses add options for students

Grant Beaty, Charger Staff

This year Cookeville High School is expanding its options by adding seven new classes. These classes are World Literature, Honors American History, German III, Web Page Design I and II, and Cabling Technology.

Mrs. Carolyn Hawkins, who teaches English 10 and English 11, will also now be teaching World Literature next semester, which is an honors level class. “Any student in grades ten through twelve who want to know about the literature in other countries besides America and Europe who like to read would be good for this class,” said Hawkins. This class will be taking a look at literature from places such as Africa, Scotland, Canada and Australia. “We will be studying both contemporary and classical authors,” said Hawkins.

Mr. Jeff Swann is teaching Honors American History this year. In previous years the only U.S. history classes offered were Regular American History and Advanced Placement American History. “This class is good for somebody who is looking for more of a challenge but doesn’t trust their skills for AP or doesn’t have room[in their schedule],” said Swann. In this class students will be working on document analyses and learning professional analyses.

Mrs. Nadine Jones teaches U.S. Government, German I and German II which used to be the only German courses offered, but next term she will also be teaching German III. “We’re going to be teaching at Capshaw, reading short stories in German and doing a lot of practical situations,” said Jones. This class is for people who took German I and II and wish to expand there knowledge of German grammar and culture.

Mr. Glen Thomas is teaching four new classes, Career Management Success, Web Page Design I and II and Cabling Technology. These new classes help students prepare for career life. “It prepares students for leaving high school and getting a job, a job that is not $5.35 an hour flipping burgers,” said Mr. Thomas. Students do hands on work in the lab and on assignments. These courses let students work at their own pace in small groups and individually.

Offering many new classes this year, Cookeville High School is constantly updating the choices for its students’ education.
