Summer TV: Is there ever a better reason to
ignore all of your friends?
Jenna King, Design Editor
Summer television is usually dull compared to fall and spring programming.
This summer, however, was an exception. Each broadcast station came
out with at least two or three new shows, and the majority of them
were hits, such as The Simple Life 2: Roadtrip (FOX), The Ashlee
Simpson Show (MTV), Blow Out (Bravo), and North Shore (FOX). Blow
Out chronicled Celeb hairstylist Jonathan Antin in his quest to
open a second hair salon. Though supposed to be serious, this show
is halariously funny. These shows were all runaway successes.
Other shows such as Blue Collar TV(WB), Celebrity Poker Showdown
(Bravo), Newlyweds (MTV), and Summerland(WB) were not far behind.
Reality TV shows were back in full force. The latest include Big
Brother 5 (CBS), The Amazing Race (CBS), The Casino (FOX), and Outback
Jack (TBS). In its fifth season, Big Brother can no longer hold
its own against the likes of Survivor or the Amazing Race. This
season’s cast included only two roomates over the age of thirty-five.
The lack of diversity is making the show increasingly more dull.
TBS boosted their ratings by acquiring the toned down, less racy
version of the HBO hit Sex and the City, which was originally planned
to go to Bravo. Honorable mentions for this summer’s TV schedule
are The Days (ABC), Method & Red (FOX), Las Vegas (NBC), and
Quintuplets (FOX). To find any of these shows’ air dates and
times, just visit their broadcast station’s website.
