The Vines are becoming highly evolved

Allison Coffey, Charger Staff

With so many new bands coming out this year alone, there really isn’t one who sticks out. With a few of my friends telling me over and over again that I need to listen to The Vines because I would just “love them,” I succumbed to their demands and downloaded the Australian band’s first single, “Get Free.” Much to my surprise, I liked it and found a new favorite band.

By going to the band’s web site, I was surprised to learn that they used to be a Nirvana cover band, Nirvana being my favorite band of all time.

After waiting a few weeks for the release of their debut album, Highly Evolved, and listening to the CD for the first time, you can here that singer, Craig Nicholls, voice has a Kurt Cobain-influenced sound.

Along with Nicholls are Patrick Matthews on bass, Ryan Griffths on acoustic guitar and Hamish Rosser on drums. All seem perfect together, another quality lost in a lot of recent bands. Although they are not as hard nor as angst-driven as Nirvana, all songs are a nice listen.

With songs to call my own (“Highly Evolved” and “Autumn Shade”) and nice, catchy lyrics, The Vines can overlap many of the music genres, each song having something that ever person can like. For example, The Vines are liked by my “heavy metal” friends as with my more “poppy” friends. Not many bands are able to do that.
