Girl Scouts rock with Salone on 90th birthday

Kathleen Robles, Charger Staff

I recently attended the 90th anniversary of the Girl Scout, or what they called the Jamboree. The three-day stay consisted mostly of crafts and funny games. Although the thoughts of crafts and intense summer heat weren’t too pleasing, the ending concert was well worth the torture.

The concert displayed the talents of The Mikenseys, The Wilkinsons, Salone, Yolonda Evans, and Virtue. Of course, my being on staff at the Jamboree, I was only able to see Salone, Yolonda Evans, and The Wilkinsons preform. I’m not a big country fan, but I’m sure that most of you would have loved the performs put on by them.

Everyone has heard about Salone, the sister of Beyonce from Destiny’s Child, even if you haven’t heard her music. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform on stage with all the passion for singing that I see in the big name bands who are still around three years later, like BSB or N’SYNC. Salone ran on stage with her dancers and jived with all the Girl Scouts and took they Swaps with a smile. To a lot of people a piece of velt and glue isn’t much, but Salone took the girl’s pins as if it were free gold. Salone made the girls even happier by defying the security guard and shaking hands with them. She topped off her performance with the song most people have probably heard on Disney’s The Proud Family theme song. She held the mic out to the crowd and got a scream of sweet music from the thousands there. She even left in a flashy white limo!

I would have missed Yolonda Evan’s performance if my friend hadn’t dragged me out for crowd duty. She was very open with the crowd and had spiced up music. How cool is it when the singer talks about her family and guitarist/husband on stage? She even let us hear a new single she had recorded that wasn’t even out! She told us the meaning behind it and that it was to her newlywed husband. She related to the Girl Scouts by talking about girls of her own. She, like Salone, recieved hand-made Swap with a smile and handshake. Her performance may not have seemed like much, but she seems like a one of a kind singer.

Where do I start with the Wilkinsons? I could start by saying something about Tyler, but he alone is not the group. So I’ll start with the fact that their singer seemed almost in perfect harmony! They were very enegetic and fun as they danced with and for the younger girls watching. Not only do they have style with what they wear but with the songs they sing. The lyrics of “Jimmy’s Got A Girlfriend” and “Twenty-Six Cents” were very tounching and sweet. I found myself singing along with them as they spun the chorus with their amazing lyrics.

With their reality song “Twenty-Six”, they closed off the concert, followed autographs and a short talk with the staff. Amanda Wilkinson was pretty quiet as my friends and I spoke with the group. I look on it and laugh now remember the way she took the stage in a storm, good music, and a smile. Steve Wilkinson was pleasant and spoke mostly with my friends. Tyler Wilkinsons laughed with all of us about our poor memory as we sang with the Girl Scouts songs we could barely finish.

All the artists made The Jamboree something special for the Girl Scouts. Maybe they’ll all still be around in ten years for the next one.
