Deadlines, quark, and double mint cookies--words from the editor

Leigh Ivey, Editor-in-Chief

Last year, with no offical title in the newspaper world, I never truly understood how much work goes into publishing a paper.

Yes, I wrote articles, worked on Page Maker, and pasted up the pages when we were ready to put the paper to bed. Yet I didn’t fully appreciate how much work our editors did.

While I was taking my time thinking of article ideas or what would be the prettiest way to lay out my page, they were in here working on things I only recently learned about--gradient, photo shop, page headers, and thousands of other things that are sometimes taken for granted when reading The Charger.

This year, everything changed. It was a rude awakening--I had to learn how to create items that I knew almost nothing about. Luckily, with help from Kristen Mitchelle, one of last year’s editors, I have managed to make it through the first issue.

Emilee Chaffin and I have stayed after school for hours on end, designing page headers, lining up text, and sizing the millions of pictures needed for the issue. Staying late wasn’t all bad, though, especially when our wonderful advisor Sharon Anderson brought us cookies (by the way, the new Double Delight Mint and Cream Oreos are excellent, as are the Chips Ahoy Candy Blasts) to give us our much needed energy.

Although I have learned that publishing a newspaper isn’t all fun and games, I know that this is going to be an excellent year for The Charger.

And seriously, try those cookies.
