Competition Cheer...a whole new story

Chris Lynch , Charger Staff

The game is a blowout and the people beside you are starting to irritate you with their senseless yelling. What do you do?

Watch the cheerleaders, of course! According to Holly Lane, who has been cheering since the eighth grade, “Cheerleading is the backbone for CHS school spirit.” I would have to agree with her in that statement. All the cheerleaders agree that they cheer for the love of cheering instead of the whole popularity cliche. I wondered if they were serious about this, or if they had another agenda.I personally feel this agenda is competition. The fact is that our competition cheerleaders are top-notch. Most people believe cheerleaders are just dancers encouraging their school team, but in competition cheer, they compete with many other schools, therefore making cheerleaders an official sport. The CHS squad attended a TTU camp for varsity cheering on July16-19 and won first place in, homepom, the extreme routine, and the cheer competition.

Coach Barbara Huffine stated, “The competition will be participating in three competitions this year, which includes the national in Orlando, Florida.” The competition squad has to practice three times a week for two hours, while the varsity squad practices only once a week after sports begin. I’ve always pondered if teachers treat the cheerleaders differently than other girls. According to Tara Holt, who has been cheering since elementary school, “It depends on the teacher and how well-behaved you are in class.”Privileges are earned by being a cheerleader. For instance, they get into games for free and get to travel to places like Disney World. Chelsea Stringer quoted, “Competition cheerleading requires a great deal of practice and gives you a feeling of accomplishment after performing your routine.” This little world of cheerleading is interesting and is considered an extremely complicated sport and should not be taken lightly.
