Academic Team... much to live up to

Erin McMillan, Charger Staff

With last year’s Academic Team ranking as the Tennessee State Champions and number five in the nation, this year’s Academic Team has a lot to live up to. Six teams will be taken to the team’s first competition this year in September at Ezell Harding. This will be a southeast regional event with competitors from Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Alabama.

Each player is expected to do well. Their coach, Mrs. Hawkins, said, “Each year brings new challenges to our team. The returning players , naturally want to equal or better the standings of the previous year. Our players have always met the challange of setting their own pace and establishing their own new records. I see no reason for that to be any different this year.”

The team’s new players include the following juniors Ross Binkley and Evan Paul, sophomores Samantha McCrary and Maggie Ragland, and freshmen Paige Bowman, Ward Jordan, Eddie Liu, Philip Redding, Jordan Wolfe, Alice Doubet, Christina Li, Mo Ojo, and Ryan Shanahan.

Cookeville High School will be hosting four competitions this year. Over the course of the year they will attend nineteen competitions,twenty-one if they make it to the national level. This will give them plenty of time to expand their stengths including their depth of knowledge, their ability to do well under pressure, staying focused, and the competition experience of the returning players. It will also allow them to obliterate their weaknesses.
