What time does the car leave? I'm ready

Amber Dixon, Charger Staff

"Baby You Can Drive My Car," "On the Road Again," "Rolling" and "The Wheels on the Bus." Let's face it, most people have been going on road trips for as long as they can remember. With family, friends, or even your dog, getting away to see the sights is always fun.

My family has taken road trips ever since I was a small child. The biggest one was moving to Cookeville, TN from Portland, Or.

Now about once a month, my mother decides the family is going to take a road trip. It is usually to see other friends or family in a different state. I love family, and I love traveling. I'm packed just as soon as the words are out of her mouth; I'm usually beeping the horn to get everyone out of the house and into the car.

The last trip, we decided to see a friend of the family at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. He was a part of the 278th Regiment going for training in Iraq. After picking him up we drove down to the beach part of Biloxi, MS.

The beach in Mississippi was ugly, but there were really cool jellyfish. You could wade out 200 yards before water water went past your knees, which is pretty far since I'm only 5'1".

Eight hours of road might sound boring, but there are lots of ways to make it fun. My brother and I play the oldest car games like "cows in the graveyard," "20 Questions" and "license plate names." Going over mountains and trying to find a radio station is awful. That is when CDs come in handy.

Visiting different states can inspire new tastes. When we stopped in Georgia, the peaches were delicious. Florida has the best oranges, and Maryland has some great seafood restaurants.

I'm not the only one who likes road trips. Junior John Teague, who also takes many road trips with his family said, "I love just being able to get away. They are like mini vacations, trips away from the real world." Kayla Boaz, a senior at CHS said, "I love to take road trips. I like going to other places away from Cookeville."

Sure flying would be much faster, but when time is not an issue, jump into your car and do something different.
