Student parking only!

Alison Palmer, Editor-in-Chief

Every morning I drag myself out of bed, climb into my white Pontiac and head to school.  As I pull into the student parking lot, I glance around at the other cars.  All of a sudden, I  realize that the people behind the wheels are way too old to be in high school. What does this mean?  Yes my friends, our student parking lot has been infiltrated by parents.

This problem has been around for a while.  Parents dropping off and picking up their kids in the student parking lot have always caused more traffic, and so far I have been able to ignore it…until now.   Now don’t get me wrong; I love parents. I’m glad that they are willing to take their children to school, but they do not belong in the student parking lot.

Let’s analyze the words “student parking lot” for a moment.  “Student”- one who attends school, in this case Cookeville High School.  “Parking lot”- an area used for the parking of motor vehicles.  “Student parking lot”- an area used for parking the vehicles of people who attend Cookeville High School.  It does not mean “an area for parents to swing through and drop their kids off because they’re too lazy to go down Washington and use the parent drop-off area.”

A few days ago in the student the parking lot, I was about to pull into my parking space when I saw another car in my spot.  Who was parked in my parking space? The parking space that I paid good money for. The parking space that I greatly value and that I count on to be empty and waiting for me every morning...you guessed it.  It was a parent dropping off her children.  I waited several minutes in my car wasting precious gas and time as the kids got out of the vehicle.  The parent then continued to spend more time talking to one of her other children in the car....in my parking space.  All the while I’m sitting with my car running, waiting not-so-patiently for her to leave.  Finally the parent pulled out of my spot and I was able to park.

Parents, the student parking lot is for students only. I’m sorry if this is inconvenient, but those are the rules set by Cookeville High School.  Right as you pull into the parking lot you can see in plain sight a sign that says, “Student parking ONLY.” You have your own area to drop off kids at the front of the building that the school has graciously made available, so use it.
I think that the parking lot congestion before and after school could be greatly reduced if parents just used the proper area.  So students, tell your parents about the frustrations of student drivers who merely want their parking lot back.
