Drumline at their very best

Kristen Herd, Charger Staff

With lots of practice, the CHS Drumline has stayed on top of it’s game and kept marching. The members of drumline this year include: Jayce Clemmons, Cody Stewart, Taylor Farragher, Dragan Ramsey , Calen Paschal, Sarah Presnall, Michelle Sowell, Shannon Reynolds, Justin Palmer; Dwyla Gibson, Grace Woodworth, April Tripp, Miriam Johnson, Eric Morgan, and Mike Russell.

The drumline recently lost a member, Perry Johnson. The Drumline, as well as others, have been deeply touched by his death. “Perry was, well, still is a part of the group,” said Eric Howard.

As Mr. Howard says, “We work a little bit harder [than the marching band].” They practice extra for home football games. “There are always alumni watching us constantly,” said Mr. Howard.

Tryouts for the drumline started in April. “They [the tryouts] are complicated,” Mr. Howard explained. Trying to find out what instrument the students can play is difficult, as one can imagine.
Drumline is basically a combination of music, athletics, theater, and dance. “They get creative themselves and put in visuals,” said Mr. Howard.

In the past, CHS Drumline has won two state championships with winter drumline. Our drumline is well known across the state. Mr. Howard stated three reasons why they are: Mr . Talbert is a drummer himself, Mr. Howard is able to work with the drumline, and the drumline plays world music (different rhythms from different cultures) whenever possible.

Everyone is invited to come and watch the drumline practice every Friday!
