More than a battle of the brains

“To get to the top, you must be willing to climb the mountain.” This is the quote is on the bulliten board outside of Mrs. Hawkins’ room. With practice every day of the week, the Academic team lives by this quote.

At the end of last year the Academic team went to Chicago and competed in the American Scholastic Competiton Network ( ASCN) Tournament of Champions. They came in seventeenth place out of thirty-nine teams. They also won the WCTE T.V. Championship. It was their ninth consecutive win and their thirteenth overall title in that tournament. They came in sixth overall for the State comprtitions.
Some of the new members of the team include freshmen Jasper Alison, Jacob Lopez, Frank Moss, sophmore Chase Thomas, and juniors Josh Price and Rushi Amin. Returning members are sophmores Mark Gibbons, Greg Paul, Bekim Heliti, Matt Sydris, Dave Matson, and Joe Powell, juniors Jordan Wolfe, Mo Ojo, seniors Lee Nutini, Maggie Ragland, Rishabh Shah, Samantha McCrary, and Josh Blair.

So far this year the academic team has been to one competition in Livingston and one at Ezell Harding. In Livingston, the second team for the Cavaliers won first place in the competition beating the team from York. At Ezell Harding the team played well coming in ninth or tenth place out of fifty-five teams. The second team placed at about thirty-second
place.

Some of the upcoming events include the Onieda Junior Varsity Bowl on Oct. 9,the Jackson County HS Battle of the Brains Invitation Quiz Bowl on Oct. 23, and the Upperman invitational Scholastic Bowl on Oct. 30. They also host three competitions this year; including the Cavalier Academic Tournament on Nov. 6, Upper Cumberland Winterfest Invitational Acadademic Tournament on Jan. 8, and the Cavalier Junior Varsity Wonder Bowl on Mar. 5. “We all like each other and have a good time,” says Mrs. Hawkins, “It’s a good activity and we are looking foward to a good year.”
