JROTC challenges CHS students to give a "Hooagh!"

Grant Beaty, Charger Staff

JROTC, or Junior Reserve Officer Training Core, is the school’s largest class and school program; it has approximately 145 students this semester and the same amount next semester.

The two instructors are SFC. David Frazier and LTC. Joe Uzelac. There are many reasons that JROTC is the biggest school program

“[JROTC] is for people looking for challenges both physically and mentally,” said LTC. Uzelac.

Also if a student takes JROTC twice they don’t have to take lifetime wellness.

If a student takes it three times and joins the Army they start out with a higher rank. “JROTC is unlike any other class at Cookeville High School,” said LTC. Uzelac, “ everybody has hands on training and real life scenarios.

JROTC also has many events coming up with the Military ball in December, a Veterans Day program in November, a Formal inspection in November, and a pentathlon that includes a two mile run, a one-hundred yard dash, pull ups, push ups, and sit ups.

JROTC students uphold the acronym LDRSHIP (Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless service, Honor, Integrity, personal courage).

They also say “hooagh”, a word that means anything but no. Hooagh is most closely associated with the infantry but is used by the rest of the Army too.

Students who are looking for an exciting hands-on class and who want a physical challenge should consider JROTC.
