Variety of clubs active at chs this year

CHS has several different clubs available to its students. To help students know a little bit more about each club, we decided to provide a list of all the ones available and some information about each.

FCA
Sponsor: Steven Young
President: Bill Ferrell
Plans: “FCA meets weekly on Wednesday mornings at 7:15 a.m. in the gym. This is a small group meeting where students can encourage each other in their walks. FCA also meets once a month during club time. Listen for announcements for FCA’s next meeting.”

JROTC
Sponsor: David Frazier and Joe Uzelac
President: Justin Birdwell
Plans: “The JROTC Club meets on the first and third club days. We will conduct a battalion formation, hold staff meetings, and additionally allow our color guard/drill, pentathlon and raider teams on opportunity to meet.”

Key Club
Sponsor: Peggy Cho
President: Laura Hull
Plans: “The Key Club is a service club which is sponsored by the Cookeville Kiwanis Club. Plans for the year include leaf-raking for the elderly, ‘Hairy-Legs’ contest, visitation and games for nursing homes, a food drive for the needy, Valentine cards for nursing home patients, UNICEF Halloween donations, and maybe a dance.”

Leo Club
Sponsor: Jennifer Fields
President: Amber Flatt
Plans: “The Leo Club, sponsored by the Cookeville Evening Lions Club, is a service organization whose motto is ‘Leadership, Experience, Opportunity.’ Some of our service projects involve Bethesda Healthcare Facility, Genesis House, local fire fighters, and the Lions Club’s annual horse show.”

Mu Alpha Theta
Sponsor: Terry Scott, Landon Melton, and Misty Waller
President: Bobby Liu
Plans: “Mu Alpha Theta is a club that gives those good in math a chance to shine. We plan to go to some math competitions, including the one at the University of Tennessee.”

Poetry Club
Sponsor: Mary Martin
Plans: “The Poetry Club plans to publish a booklet containing original poetry by CHS students. The booklet will be published and on sale in the spring. Any students interested in submitting poetry may turn in their original poems in room 257.”

SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
Sponsor: Joy Hamby
Plans: “The SADD Club promotes students helping each other to make safe, healthy life decisions. Major activities include Whiteout, Angel of Death day, the Drunk Driving Simulator, and informational activities such as posters and flyers.”

Student Congress
Sponsor: Kathy Ligon, Tracy Jones, and Linda Carlen
President: Spencer Huddleston
Plans: Plans were made for Homecoming. Theme: Cavaliers Through the Generations

Acoustic Music Jam Club
Sponsor: Jack Sallee and Randy Mansell
Plans: “To promote interest in and to develop proficiency in the playing of acoustic sting music.”

Cultural Awareness Club
Sponsor: Terry Scott
President: Suman Natarajan
Plans: “The purpose of this club is to promote awareness in different cultures. Students will discuss world events and foreign issues. Pictures, food, and music of different cultures will supplement the discussions.”

French Club
Sponsor: Jan Presley
Plans: “French Club consists of current and former French students. It sustains interest in the French language and culture through a variety of activities such as Christmas caroling, a Mardi Gras party, and a French dinner.”

Habitat for Humanity
Sponsor: Terry Scott
President: Karen Ealey
Plans: “We are going to be doing about four fund-raisers this year, especially with the overwhelming response of around 250 members. I feel this will be a great, fun, and exciting year. “

History Club
Sponsor: Laura Carter and Emily Fiveash
President: Jonathan Stewart
Plans: “We will sponsor the Black History and Women’s History months. We plan to visit the depot after school and eventually become docents. We continue to sponsor the Civil War Discussion group for students who meet after school.”

SkillsUSA-VICA
Sponsor: Martha Dyer
President: Savannah Smiley
Plans: “SkillsUSA-VICA is a national affiliated club for students enrolled in Trade and Industrial classes in secondary and post secondary schools. Students participate in community service projects, leadership activities and competitions at local, regional, state and national levels.”

Spanish Honor Society
Sponsor: Ailene Click, Michael Barlow, and Brian Miesch
President: Megan Goolsby
Plans: “Spanish Honor Society is a national organization that recognizes student achievement. Several projects are planned for this school year including painting the walls in the foreign language wing and participating in Tennessee Tech’s World Cultures Day.”

Cosmetology
Sponsor: Martha Dyer
Plans: “Cosmetology participate in community service projects such as the Enchanted Kingdom. We compete in various competitions, attend a cosmetology show sometime during the year, and participate in an annual fund-raiser.”

Electronics
Sponsor: Glen Thomas
President: Bill Shaffer
Plans: “Everyone that is in the club has bought a soldering project and will work on them during club time. We plan to have a club picnic sometime in the spring. Anyone can bring in electronics that need to be fixed, and we will try to fix it for them.”

Environmental Hiking Club
Sponsor: Lisa Burgess, Barbara Huddleston
President: Bracie Clinton
Plans: “The Hiking and Environmental Club is a very active club with approximately 100 members. Activities include a wide variety of experiences such as hiking, spelunking, rock climbing, and white water rafting, as well as volunteer work for Parks Earth Day, and the Clean Commission. Students may join at any time by paying dues of ten dollars.”

Interact
Sponsor: Rosalie Andrews, Sharon Anderson, Nadine Jones
President: Amanda Nixon
Plans: “Interact is a service origination dedicated to the ideal of ‘service above self.’ The members are involved in a variety of service projects throughout the year, including Fall Fun Fest, trail stomp, helping at the animal shelter and after school reading.”

JOB Club
Sponsor: Jan McReynolds, Summer Wilson, and Steve Reagon
Plans: “The JOB Club is designed for students who want to learn more about job seeking and job retention skills. Students are eligible if they are currently enrolled are have completed a Work Skills class. Activities consist of guest speakers, videos, a service project, and a field trip to a local business.”

VICA
Sponsor: Danny Sliger
Plans: Field trips, fund raisers and a VICA competition in the spring

4-H Club
Sponsor: Ginny Poteet
Plans: “The 4-H Club focuses its activities outside of school. The club only meets when the County Extension agent calls a special meeting. Anyone wishing to join 4-H will need to contact Melissa Henry at the Agricultural Extensions offices.”

Beta Club
Sponsor: Judy Schinbeckler, Brian Miesch, and Jan Presley
President: Nikki Elmore
Plans: “The Senior Beta Club is a leadership and service organization whose purpose is to stimulate effort and reward academic achievement and promote the qualities of worthy character. This year, the Beta Club will be involved with Cookeville Leisure Services, Putnam County Humane Society, Salvation Army, and other charitable and community service organizations.”

FCCLA
Sponsor: Sheila Wakefield and Sabra Lacy
President: Stacy Nash
Plans: “We will be competing in our STAR events (Students Taking Action with Recognition). We plan to continue our work with Bill Gibson on the Child Lures Program. We will be serving at functions for Dr. Martin.”

FFA
Sponsor: David Birdwell
President: Kiley Bohannon
Plans: “The FFA is a national organization for students enrolled in agriculture. We participate in many Career Development Events such as judging horses, livestock, and soils. We also participate in public speaking contests, leadership conferences, mechanical skills, and landscaping contests.”

German Club
Sponsor: Nadine Jones
President: Senka Hadzimuratovic
Plans: “The German Club promotes the German language and culture. We sponsor activities to support the track and cross country teams, create ornaments for senior citizens, and other school and community services.”

Tennessee Tomorrow
Sponsor: Laura Carter and Marie Thompson
President: Jacque Brown
Plans: “Our club played a big part in the school wide activities on Sept. 11. We headed up the Spirit Links competition for Homecoming, as well as community activities, such as collecting items for soldiers on duty in Afghanistan. We will also spearhead activities for Proud to Be an American week in November.”

Other clubs include Pep Club, DECA, Constellation Club, Reality Check, Science Fiction Club, HOSA, Prayer Club, Renaissance Club, and Film Club.
