Speedos’n’such

Orin Christianson, Charger Staff

Sitting on a stand of bleachers for hours, in over eighty degree temperatures, bored out of ones mind, one wonders why so much attention goes to football when swimming is so much more exciting. Swimming is the only sport where people cheer as loudly for last place as the do first place. Sure, watching people swim back and forth sounds boring, but how does one explain the popularity of tennis?

This year, the swim team is coached by Mr. Terry Scott because Mr. D. D. Tennant, that quirky biology teacher that everyone knows and loves, left coaching to pursue other interests. Scott subscribes to the doctrine of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” in that he will make no drastic changes since the team has been successful in past. That’s not to say that the coach does not have goals for the team. He summed it up by saying,

“No injuries, we all have a good time, and when the opportunity represents itself, we win.” It goes without saying that we need to beat Smyrna. The team’s strengths are the stroke techniques and youthful enthusiasm. However, the main thing the team needs to work on in order to be successful representatives of the high school will be the long distance swimmers’ endurance.

One further important piece of information - drug testing starts in the next month, and yes, the swim team will get what they paid for this year.
