Shakira vs. Britney: Battle of the sexy

Senka Hadzimuratovic, Charger Staff

While Shakira wrote her first song at age eight, Britney Spears, at the same age, was trying to shake what little booty she had on The Mickey Mouse Club. Today, the trilingual Colombian beauty is the obvious winner if put to battle against the Queen of [mind-numbing, mass-produced] pop.

Shakira, who was born in Colombia and has a father who’s of 100% Lebanese descent, performs music that illustrates her remarkable background. “My music is a fusion of elements,” she says (on her website; she turned down my request to interview her...too short-notice). She’s released albums in both Spanish and English, having written all of the songs herself.

With a strong voice and lyrics filled with passion, she certainly beats the cheesy lines found in many of Britney’s songs.

Not only is she more talented, Shakira’s authentic looks and modest view of herself (as evident in her first hit single “Whenever, Wherever”) make her much more appealing than the fake, trashy look of of the pleasing-the-public Madonna-wannabe. “Shakira is the hottest girl of all time,” says sophomore Mike Ford. Junior Ryan Goodman adds, “Yeah, and she has an awesome voice. So much better than Britney.”

Overall, there’s no question: Shakira gets the higher marks in talent and looks...Britney fans, don’t even try to convince me otherwise.
