CHS’s cross country teams are continuing to improve as the season rolls on. At the meet at Rippa Villa Plantation on Sept. 14, the men’s team placed second out of ten teams, and the women placed first. Cookeville’s Justin Birdwell placed first in the men’s race with an outstanding time of 16:23, while freshman Emily Earles’ time of 22:40 in the women’s race helped her to a third place finish.

Following Birdwell were seniors Spud Flatt with a sixth place finish, Jesse Dalton in seventh place, Neal Jackson coming in eleventh, and freshman Wes Flatt finishing sixteenth.

In the women’s race, Earles was followed by Karen Green and Rachael Crook, capturing the eighth and ninth place finishes, Sarah Kmet placing twelvth, and Marie Lee with a thirteenth place finish.

The women’s B-team, including Meagan Franklin, Anastasia Shinbeckler, Mary Bowen, Kayla Bean, and Prija Mahajan, got a perfect score of fifteen at the meet, while the men’s B-team managed for all five runners to place in the top ten.

Coach Bill Wrasman commented, ‘Doing well at this meet showed me that we have potential, but we still have a long way to go. We have to work harder if we’re going to win regionals.”

Freshman runner Wes Flatt agreed, saying, “The team’s going well, but all of us could definitely improve.”

The team is still striving for perfection. Wrasman said, “We’ve got to get three guys running the race in under seventeen minutes, and all the top five need to be finishing in less than eighteen minutes. The younger girls are beginning to figured out what cross country is all about, and I took for us to continue improving throughout the year.”

Daily practices aren’t discouraging the runners. The teams are working hard to reach their full potential.

The Tennessee Classic held at Steeple Chase on Sept. 21 gave the men’s team a 22nd place finish out of 47 teams, and the women placed 24th out of 35.

The Ryan Burnett Memorial Invitational will be held at the CHS course on Oct. 12.

The Mid-State meet is to be held on Oct. 24, also at home Come support CHS’s fantastic cross country teams!
