Disasters foretold by scary apparitions

Chris Lynch , Charger Staff

Everyone has heard of Jack the Ripper and Son of Sam, some might even remember Leopold and Lobe and Vlad the Impaler, but people around Point Pleasant, West Virginia have another evil phenomenon to deal with--a creature known as Mothman!

Supposedly an all-white apparition with shiny red eyes that glow in the dark like bicycle reflectors, Mothman has been sighted by many local citizens, mostly near a power plant at the edge of town. Reports indicate that when witnesses first encounter the phenomenon, they are blinded by a bright light and their eyes turn blood-red from the experience.

Victims always come out of the experience drawing pictures of a sketchy creature who is either entirely black or white. Those drawings are the only pictures ever recorded about the Mothman.

Speculation abounds that the creature has demonic roots. It has been known to swoop down on traffic and create vehicular collisions; it can predict natural disasters that are soon to occur; and it generally scares the wits out of anyone who crosses its path. The first sighting of the Mothman occurred in Point Pleasant in 1964. There have been over 100 sightings alone in this small town in West Virginia.

In 1926 one of the worst engineering disasters occurred in China. The Xiaon Te Dam collapsed sending over forty billion gallons of water and killing nearly fifteen thousand people. The Chinese report that they saw the Mothman. The most famous occurrence was the collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, on December 15, 1967, a disaster in which some forty-six people lost their lives.

There was a malfunction with the traffic light on one side of the bridge that allowed the bridge to be overweight with Christmas present-packed vehicles, causing the forty-year-old bridge to collapse into the river.

Point Pleasant consists of devoted religious people who attend church every week, therefore producing their personal theory of the Mothman as an angel of good or evil. Other theories state that the Mothman was a mutation or an UFO from another planet.
The Mothman Prophecies by John Keel was the first book written about this phenomenon, trying to explain these strange and creepy events. The new blockbuster hit, The Mothman Prophecies, starring Richard Gere, is the first film production released about the Mothman.

The Mothman remains an enigmatic figure--sometimes determined to save certain lives, sometimes standing by to watch the death of thousands of innocent civilians. But whether or not we understand its motives, the Mothman is a fascinating and compelling mystery.
