Charger adviser state TOY finalist

Thomasina Bennett, Charger Staff

One of Tennessee’s 2003 Teacher of the Year finalists is Cookeville High School’s very own Sharon Anderson.

She teaches eleventh grade U.S. History and Newspaper Production and has been a teacher for eighteen years. She has been a teacher at Cookeville High School since 1996.
The selection process begins with nominations and voting by the faculty in individual schools.

She says, “I am deeply honored and very excited.”

This year the Tennessee Department of Education will honor state and district finalists in the 2003 Teacher of the Year program during an Oct. 17 recognition ceremony at the Nashville Convention Center in Nashville, TN. The ceremony will be part of the first annual Tennessee Educators Leadership Conference.

During the awards ceremony, State Education Commissioner Faye P. Taylor will announce which of the six state finalists will represent Tennessee in the National Teacher of the Year program.

“We are honored to recognize these teachers for their accomplishments,” said Education Commissioner Faye Taylor.

“The daily miracles teachers like these perform in their classrooms to move our students forward are the very foundation of public education.”

This year’s Tennessee teacher of the year will receive $5,000 and each of the state finalists will receive $1,000 from Mrs. Grissom’s Salads to better their school. Also, each finalist will receive a crystal plaque, sponsored by Educators Credit Union, from the State Department of Education.

The State Board of Education will provide special recognition, and the state winner will have the opportunity to participate in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

The Tennessee Teacher of the Year will compete in November for National Teacher of the year.

The National Teacher of the Year is selected in the spring and announced from the White House in April.

If you happen to see Ms. Anderson in the halls, be sure and congratulate her and wish her good luck on October 17.
