As a country, we shall overcome

by Spencer Huddleston, Charger Staff

The unthinkable has happened. The United States, until this point seen as an impregnable fortress, a land of safety and security, has been viciously attacked by faceless terrorists.

As the dead are mournfully counted and material damage is assessed, many questions arise in the American mind: Who has done this to us? How do we retaliate? In the view of this writer, the most important aspect on the horizon of this country will be our ability to stand together and face the enemy.

Every day in our school we say the Pledge of Allegiance, but here lately the meaning has become deeper. Now we must look into the true meaning of "indivisible."

Will we be able to unite as one voice, supporting our leaders and lending hands to our fellow man? Can we put aside the worthless excuses of "we are too far from the action," and realize in order for America to overcome this tragedy, we must work wholeheartedly for this cause, as our grandparents and great-grandparents did in World War II.

Although it is difficult to see in the town of Cookeville, so far from the carnage and disaster of this world, the faces we see every day in the hall could very well be the leaders of this nation, this world.

Our only choice is to answer the call, accept the fact that we have taken a large blow, but as Americans with unrivaled resolve. WE WILL OVERCOME! God Bless America.
