New Band Bonanza

Wes Garner, Charger Staff

On Sept. 29, the Key club held a concert at the First Presbyterian Church to raise goods for those who have suffered in New York and Washington, DC.  The entertainment was provided by David Epley and Scott Faw of the Moonlight Cellar Band, The Otherside, and Rained Out.

The concert was quite fun even though the attendance wasn’t exactly stadium filling.  There were various sounds and styles ranging from rock to bluegrass to even reggae.  It wasn’t the best place for a concert to sound good, but the church’s lot was great for grabbing attention because it was next to a fairly busy intersection.

Scott and David opened the show with their acoustic stylings of blues, bluegrass, and a touch of classic rock.  Their sounds were blended very well except for, at times; one instrument would overpower the other.  They played a great set, though, despite the conditions they worked in.  Plus, most of their songs came "out of the blue" and were jams, since their performance was somewhat unexpected.  If they did this well with an unprepared 2/5 of the band, think of how the whole band sounds.

The whole Moonlight Cellar Band will be playing at the Whistlestop Café on Oct. 18; the admission is five dollars.

Next, The Otherside came up with their brand of Christian Rock.  The members include Sam Spurlock, Chad Lucius, Jake Standifer, Zack Henson, and Greg Lucius.  These guys have a really neat sound building up.  All of their stuff is original, too.  Their works range from quiet, moody songs to guitar fueled power houses.  I liked most of their songs, especially the last song they did, entitled "Broken."

The last band to play was Rained Out.  They have been around for  about a month or two.  The cast for this band includes Patrick Mayberry, Chris Luhn, Daniel Uthus, and Yours Truly.  Our songs ranged from Beatles and Bob Marley covers to instrumental jam pieces.

Also, during these jams, David and Scott of the Moonlight Cellar Band came up and played along with us.  I was surprised at how well we did, especially when Scott and David joined in.  We had to cut back on some of the songs we had originally planned for time’s sake, but that was pretty much the only problem.  Rained Out’s next show will be the opener for the Moonlight Cellar Band on Oct. 18.

Although the performances were successful, the cause for the show was not.  Very few people brought goods to support New York and Washington, DC.  Unfortunately this is a very large downside to the event.  Although I was pumped from the success of the show, I couldn’t avoid the fact that the cause for our fun was a failure.

If you have a band and would like me to write about you, please come up to me in the halls or call me at 372-8791.
