The CHS Girls Golf Team is nearing the end of their 2001 season. The girls had a productive season as well as a season with change.
This season has been a build-up year for Girls Golf. The team from 1999 came home with the State Championship. The class of 2001 graduated the last three members of that team. Losing Laura McCaslin, Danielle Maxwell, and Jessica Butler-Hines was a tremendous loss to the golf program, but this year's girls have picked up and moved on.
Not only did the team lose three seniors, but they gained a new coach. Coach Kevin Bray is doing double time at CHS coaching both Girls Golf and Boys Basketball. Bray is excited about this year's team and the way they played. "I feel great. Golf is a great game. I'm getting g to work with a great group of girls this year," Bray said.
This year's competition included McMinnville, Sparta, Crossville, and other schools from around the mid-state. The girls finished with a great record of 20-21.
"Last year they finished third in the State, and two years ago they finished first. But we're really starting all over since all those girls have graduated," Bray said. He also said, "To have a record over 500 is good, so we've done well."
This year's team leader s include Senior, Joanna Gerold and Junior, Jacque Brown. The team also holds five promising sophomores in Sara Bilbrey, Nikki Dishman, Holly Lane, Erin McCollough, and Hillary Pate. All the girls have stepped up to the plate and performed at their best.
CHS Girls Golf member and sophomore, Hillary Pate said of the season, "I've enjoyed it. For losing three strong seniors, we came up very competitive for a young team."
Playoffs began Oct. 1 with the State Championship running from Oct.. 15-17 at Montgomery-Bell.
Though they've had adversity to overcome and new challenges to face along the way, the 2001 Girls Golf Team has come out on top.
Congratulations on an outstanding season and the best of luck in 2002!
