Killer Season for Cavalier Cross-Country Team Members

by Emilee Chaffin, Charger Staff

Cross country is off to a great start this year and nearing the end of its season; their record could get them to state. The boys team is breaking personal records everyday, and junior Justin Birdwell is well on his way to a new school record. The school record was set by Shaun Deal at 16 minutes and 32 seconds for the 3 mile course. Justin's best record stands at 16:39.

Others in the top positions include Spud Flatt, Krishna Rao, Ben Pauli, and Jesse Dalton with Neal Jackson, Matt Curry, Justin Proctor and Eric Lisic competing closely for spots in the top 7. The girl's top 5 are Ashley Brady, Megan Williams, Andie Bowman, Anastasia Schinbeckler, and Mary Bowen. Also making her mark on the Varsity team is freshman Danieal Day.

Surprisingly, two of the top 5 boys are new to the team this year. Justin Birdwell and Jesse Dalton are just joining the team and stepping up to show their talent. "The boys team," says Coach William Wrasman, "has a major strength. They pull together, run together and finish together at every match. The unity of this team is remarkable."

The boys have been doing really well, and championships are on their way. Coach Wrasman is not too worried because the last time all the teams competed together at the Gallatin Invitation, the boys team placed second out of around 43 teams.

The girls are moving right along as well. Some setbacks along the way include injuries to 4 girls, leaving few able to compete. However, the girls finishing eighth out of 41 teams at Gallatin gives the team confidence while looking forward to the championships. Coach Wrasman stated confidently, "The only thing that can hold us back are some teams who will possibly sneak up on us at the championships, such as Oakland."

The Mid-state Championships are Oct. 17 at Gallatin and the Region 4 Championships are the 25th in Columbia. Be sure to come and support our Cavs as they compete for the gold.
