Where have all the Cheetos gone?

by Bailey Garrett, Charger Staff

Have you noticed that discipline measures here at CHS have gone from major issues to seemingly picky ones? At one point in time, officials were worried about weapons on school property and now it seems they are more concerned about whether or not a student is walking under the stairs.

Last Tuesday, as I left Senora Click's Spanish 111 class, I had a serious craving for the new Cheetos shaped like whirls. I decided to stop at the snack machine on the second floor. But what happened? The machine would not take my money! I looked at the flashing sign on the screen. This machine will reopen at 1500 hours. Just then somebody walking down the hall kindly tells me that the machines on the second and third floor are closed during lunch. My craving would just have to wait until after third block.

Every day since then my search for whirl Cheetos has been the same. I feel like I am in the movie "Groundhog Day." Why should that delicious snack be sitting there day after day, taunting me, just out of reach?

Looking back on the past four years of high school, I realize that our class spirit has steadily declined. A large part of this has been a direct result of the increased discipline. Every year teachers complain to me about my class's lack of school spirit. I always thought that we were one of the most spirited classes.

In this year's homecoming week, I had more homework than I have had on any given week in my entire high school career. I found it extremely difficult to work on the senior float while constantly thinking about the papers and exercises awaiting me at home.

Speaking on behalf of the senior class, our goal is to show leadership by example. Every year we have built our float completely with our own student labor. I am very proud of our third place finish this year because it was our last and we built it without an outside adult.

I look back on my high school career and notice the school spirit has slowly decreased. I can't help but think maybe this decrease has been caused by picky discipline measures.

I am proud to be a Cavalier and always will be, but my pride has decreased and I don't have the school spirit I once did.
