For the second year in a row, the Cookeville High School library sponsored a Teen Read Week, including a poetry slam, reading tips for students. The “It’s Alive” theme, from the National Library Association, many literature classes went to the library to look at horror literature and old silent films to experience the “Its Alive” theme, as well as drawings for five copies of Guinness Book Of World Records.

A Poetry Slam is an event in which poets recite their original poems. The peoms are then judged by members of the audience. The major theme of the poems was love and friendship.

Seth Lynch won this year’s Poetry Slam with his poem, “Brain Tumor.” Second place went to Rosemary Dewar with her poem “For Furture Reference.” Third place went to Justin Webb with “Forever.” All three winners received a gift certificate. Twenty-one students entered this contest. Mrs. Connie McBride served as mistres of ceremonies. Joy Hamby, Ginny Poteet, and Mary Martin sponsored this event.

Throughout the week reading tips were announced over the intercom and placed in the library. These served as an incentive for teens to read. Some of these tips included reading with friends in order to strengthen a friendship and to keep a book handy at all times in case of free time in class. Teen Read Week was a great success. Mrs.Hamby said, “Teen Read Week and the Poetry Slam were a success and hope to see more people next year at the poetry slam.”
