Two Cavalier golfers head to state tournament

Kathleen Robles, Charger Staff

The season came to an end for the two Cookeville High golf teams at the Region 4 tournament held in McMinnvile on Sept. 30th.

Both teams finished fourth in their respective division.

Two players were selected to participate in the TSSAA state golf tournament and gave good account of themselves in that event, Barrett Steakley and Nikki Dishman.

Both players were recognized as their team’s MVPs at the recent CHS golf dinner held at Ryan’s Steak house on Oct. 22. Other golfers receiving awards included Jared Dunn (Future Star) , Wes Fox (Most Improved), Josh Dyer and Josh Reese (Senior Leadership Awards), and Josh Cook (Newcomer of the Year).

Other golfers recognized at the dinner and receiving awards were freshmen Tyler Reeder and Wes Korth, sophomores Caleb Reese, Phillip Judd, Addison Judd, and Addison Smith.

Junior Adam Jaynes and senior Brendon Johnson also received recognition at the banquet.

Steakley, a mainstay on the CHS boy’s team all year, fired an opening round 87 on Tuesday but came back with one of the top rounds on Wednesday with a 72 to finish at 159.

By slicing his first day score by 15 strokes, Steakley made the largest comeback in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Nikki Dishman, who opened the tournament on Tuesday with a fine 84 and was just eight shots out of the opening-day lead, skied somewhat to a 95 and finished at 179.

Congratulations to the teams for doing well this season and good luck to the returning players on a hopefully exceptional season.
