Academic team on the move
Amanda Phillips, Charger Staff
Buzzers, stiff competition and late afternoon practices--these
are things that the Academic Team is used to, especially the varsity
team.
While most students are at home and waking up on Saturday around
12:30, the Academic team has been awake and competing or unloading
their things.
The team has played at four competitions, Ezell-Harding , Walton
High, and UT Chattanooga. The Academic Team has competitions two
or three times a month from September through April; if they qualify
they will go to a national event at the end of the year in late
May or early June.
At Ezell- Harding they came home with first place in the regional
event. While at the Walton High Challenge, they placed second and
fifth out of 66 teams. At the UT Chattanooga Tournament , CHS came
home with third place out of 12 teams.
The current win-loss record for team one is 39 to 2 , and team
twos record is 25 to 8 . So far, they rank fifth in the nation
from ASCN National Championship. They are also 2001-02 Tennessee
State Champions, 2001-02 WCTE-TV Upper Cumberland Champions .
When asked about going to the regional playoffs sponsor Carolyn
Hawkins replied, We have a full schedule of competitions
to play in both in state and out of state. We have already qualified
for three national championship tournament bids this year, so we
hope to be able to play.
The students are encouraged to come see the team play and there
is no charge but most of the tournaments are out of town. You have
the chance to see them in action on Nov. 9. There will be 35 to
40 teams here to compete with teams from all over Tennessee. Up
coming tournaments include Nov. 15-16 at the Vanderbilt University
High School Academic Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee. On Nov. 23, the
team will compete at Brookwood High School Scholars Bowl in Shellville,
Georgia. This tournament is the largest high school quiz bowl in
the nation with more than one hundred teams competing
The Knowledge Master Open National Computer Quiz Bowl will be held
on Dec. 4.
Good luck to the CHS Academic Team in their upcoming tournaments!
