There's a new SRO in town

Tara Abner, Charger Staff

To make you feel safer there is a new man in town.

His name is Harold Eaton, and he is our new SRO (School Resource Officer). He is one of two here at Cookeville High School.

When asked how he likes working at Cookeville High School he replied, "I love it. I get to know students and try to help them as much as possible."

Mr. Eaton was originally going to be an SRO at Upperman, but they wanted an experienced officer.

Officer Flatt left us and went to Upperman and CHS welcomed officer Eaton. Jerry Abston is the one who makes the decisions as to who goes where in the schools.

Mr. Eaton started off in law enforcement working with corrections. He then had the opportunity to work on road patrol for two and a half years. After that he decided he wanted to help younger adults in Cookeville to make a difference in Putnam County.

"The difference between being an SRO is you have the chance to diffuse a problem, where as on the road it is in progress or has already happened," said Mr. Eaton.

SRO officers do more than what students may think they do.

"A lot of our job is to counsel on law and teach it. We also do security at games and make sure the building, faculty, students, and property are kept safe. We are also guest speakers in the classrooms, but our main job is to ensure the safety of the students and faculty," said Mr. Eaton.

"While patrolling the halls I have met many students, but only on a first name basis," says Eaton.

Mr. Eaton is not currently married, but has two children ages 12 and 10. He has no pets and his favorite food is anything Mexican.

Mr. Eaton says, "I have enjoyed working here. We have a great student body and faculty, and I hope everyone has a great rest of the year."
