CHS runnners claim Region Championship

Leigh Ivey, Charger Staff

A great season of cross country running is nearing its end. They ran the last race of the season--the State Championships.

The top three teams from every region in Tennessee are qualified to compete in the State meet. Last year the CHS cross country team qualified to go to the state meet by finishing third in the Region Championships. This year the team won first place and went all the way to the state.

At this year's Region 4 Championship meet, seven guys made it possible for the CHS team to win first place. Justin Birdwell, Spud Flatt, Ben Pauli, Neil Jackson, Krishna Rao, Rob Miller, and Jesse Dalton took the team to the state competition. Along with helping their own team to victory, Birdwell, Flatt, and Pauli were named to the Mid-State Team, a team consisting of fifteen runners with the lowest times in certain meets.

Our cross country team was more than a little excited about going to State this year. Coach Bill Wrasman says, "Last year we made it to the state meet, and we were just glad to be there. We placed twenty-four. This year we don't want to just show up. We'd like to be in at least the top ten."

The State Meet was held on Nov. 3 at the Steeple Chase Course in Brentwood. Our men's team placed 12th. It was a great, standout season and we're proud of our cross country teams. Congratulations on a fantastic season. We're looking forward to a great season next year.
