Coaches Brooks and Duff optimistic as season opens

Thomasina Bennett, Charger Staff

Once again it is time for softball. Yes, it is still 40 degrees outside, but CHS’s team is already hard at work.

Both Coach VerdiceDuff and Coach Sam Brooks are optimistic about this season. The coaches bring a wealth of experience and a long winning tradition to the team. Whether in pre-season conditioning sessions or daily practices, the girls know their coaches believe in them and their winning potential.

They say that even though most of the girls on the team are fairly young (there is only one senior, Marie Lee) the outlook for the year is good if the team works hard.

Both say that they were not satisfied with the season last year. They hope to imrove on last season’s perfomance in a number of ways.

Their goal for this year is to win the district and go to Regions and beyond.

They are never satisfied with anything less. Having a young team could be an excuse to do poorly or not make it to districts, but the coaches refuse to use it as such.

Both agree, “We want to compete anytime we step between the white lines.”

The girls that these optimistic coaches are laying all of their hopes on this year are Erin Currier, the starting pitcher, Orianna Knowlton, catcher; Kayla Allen, first base; Jennifer Lee, second basemen; Tara Polk, short stop; Valarie Owens, third basemen; Kristie Powell, left fielder; Marie Lee, center fielder; and Candace Nabors, right fielder. These are the girl who are the starting line-up for the 2003 season

Both the CHS softball team and the coaches are ready to begin a pheomenal season.

Come out and support the Lady Cavs at their first game on March 11, (during Spring Break) when they play a double header against Warren County at 3 pm, and against White county at 6:30 pm.
