“Loads of fun” and “ready to jump in” describe CHS tennis

Rachel M. Robinson, Charger Staff

Girls’ tennis at CHS is off and swinging. Most of the girls have been playing together for awhile, although there is a new face among them.

The team has a new coach this year, Steve Young.

You may have seen him roaming the halls of the science department, coaching the football team, or talking to FCA members, but Coach Young has always had a love for tennis.

“I always had an interest in tennis, whether it was playing or observing. The opening of the position was a good opportunity to take the program.”

Coach Young also commented that he always goes into a sports season with high expectations.

“We have a strong junior class. Liz Williams is a top-seeded player, Jessica Jolley is one of our top senior players, and Leigh Ivey should be a significant contributor.”

Even with all this talent on the team, they practice every day from 3:30 to about five to perfect their skills.

Tryouts were held the last weekend in February.

Coach Young says, “I’m excited about the new group of folks that have tried out for the team. Several of these people will be contributors... I’m ready to jump in.”

Coach Karen Brooks will be coaching the boys tennis team again this year.

She took over the position of head men’s tennis coach when Coach Allison resigned five years ago. “I love working with the boys... they’re loads of fun.”
Four out of the top six players are returning this year: Justin Proctor, John Boots, Chris McReynolds, and Ian Jassit.

“I think we should be quite competitive for the District Championship.”

“Everyone on the team is valuable. It’s hard to win a match with only one person,” said Coach Brooks.

Other returning players are Daniel Vossel, Kent Goolsby, James Maggart, John Rader, and Jimmy Pierce.

New players this year are Mark Miller, Dane Cooper, Tyler Asher, Justin Davis, Zac Hennigan, Farraz Hussain, and Said Odeh.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will open their season at home with a match on March 27 against Blackman right after school at the CHS tennis courts.
