Which stars are shining brightest?

Bailey Garrett, Emilee Chaffin--Charger Staff

As promised in our last award shows article, we (Bailey and Emilee) have info and our picks for the last two big awards shows of the season.
The Grammys were Feb. 27 and our articles were due before then, so we decided to do our picks for a few good categories and see how many we guessed correctly.

For Record of the Year, some choices were “Fallin’,” “Ms. Jackson,” “Drops of Jupiter,” and “Walk On.”
“Drops of Jupiter” was our choice winner. We agreed unanimously on most all of the categories including the Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack for Album of the Year.

Song of the Year, we agreed, should be “Drops of Jupiter,” again over “Fallin’,” “I’m Like a Bird” and “Stuck in a Moment.”

With choices for Best New Artist ranging from Alicia Keys to Linkin Park to David Gray, we decided David Gray wins.
Now that the generals are out of the way, on to smaller categories.

In pop music, Best Female Performance was, by our choice, a tie between “There You’ll Be” by Faith Hill and “Someone To Call My Lover” by Janet Jackson.

Best Male Performance, Pop Music was a hard choice. With nominees consisting of Elton John’s “I Want Love” and James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” our pick has to be Michael Jackson’s “You Rock My World”.

In country, Best Female Performance includes Trisha Yearwood’s “I Would’ve Loved You Anyway” and Dolly Parton’s “Shine”, with our pick being the new artist Jamie O’Neal’s “No Arizona.”

Best Male Performance by our pick is Tim McGraw’s “Grown Men Don’t Cry.”

Best Duo for country was a hard category to pick, one consisting of Asleep at the Wheel, Brooks and Dunn, Diamond Rio, Alison Krauss and Union Station, and Lonestar. The winner we chose was “The Lucky One” by Alison Krauss and Union Station.

For Rap, Best Solo was decided on by Bailey to be Nelly’s “Ride Wit Me”. Best Duo being Ja Rule’s “Put It On Me” was quickly decided on by both of us.

For Rap Collaboration, otherwise known as artists who normally wouldn’t be caught dead together, all the nominees were good, so instead of choosing one, we ranked them 1 to 5.

First is Ja Rule and Case, “Livin It Up”, then “Where the Party At?” by Jagged Edge and Nelly, followed by “Let me Blow Ya Mind,” Eve and Gwen Stefani, fourth is “Area Codes” by Ludacris and Nate Dogg and last is “W” by Mystic and Planet Asia.

On a different note, the Oscars are coming up soon on ABC. We did our picks for a few of the main categories on these also.

Our nominees for Actor in a Leading Role are Russell Crowe, A Beautiful Mind; Sean Penn, I Am Sam; Will Smith, Ali; Denzel Washington, Training Day; and Tom Wilkinson, In the Bedroom. Neither of us are big Russell Crowe fans, therefore Sean Penn gets our vote for I Am Sam.

Actor in a Supporting Role nominees are Jim Broadbent in Iris, Ethan Hawke in Training Day, Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast, Ian McKellen in Lord of the Rings and Jon Voight in Ali. Our choice is Jon Voight with Ethan Hawke a close second.

Actress in a Leading Role choices are Halle Berry, Monster’s Ball; Judi Dench, Iris; Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge; Sissy Spacek, In the Bedroom; and our choice winner Renee Zellweger for her hilarious job in Bridet Jones’ Diary.

Our favorite Animated Feature Film is Shrek, up against Monsters, Inc. and Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius.

Best Song choices include Kate and Leopold, Lord of the Rings, Monsters, Inc. , Pearl Harbor, and Vanilla Sky. Kate and Leopold wins that one. Our winner for Best Picture is A Beautiful Mind, winning over Gosford Park, In the Bedroom, Lord of the Rings, and Moulin Rouge.

Other nominees in categories such as Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Visual Effects, Cinematography, Makeup and Costume Design, and Best Foreign Language Film are sure to make this year’s Oscars great.

A Beautiful Mind is supposed to sweep away all the other nominees at the Oscars so be sure to watch the annual Academy Awards on March 24th on ABC.
