Take me out to the ballgame

Ben Pauli, Charger Staff

Being as springtime is just around the corner and The Charger wanted to do a special movies feature, I thought I would make a list of the best baseball movies. I would like to encourage all students to go see our very own Cavalier baseball team play this spring. You will surely enjoy seeing the workman like precision and dominance of Jeremy Jones on the mound, the prowess of Jason Cobb on the basepaths, and Todd Martin’s sweet lefty swing. However, if you are not lucky enough to catch one of those, then a good baseball flick should do the trick. It’s truly American to get in the mood for baseball each spring. As James Earl Jones muses in Field of Dreams:

“The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It’s been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.”

Of course nobody is going to agree with any list completely, so here is my attempt at ranking the best baseball movies of all time.

10.
Cobb...Great movie about baseball’s fiercest competitor, Ty Cobb.
9.
61*...Good flick about the chase for Babe Ruth’s record in 1961. Excellent depiction of Roger Maris.
8.
Eight Men Out...Pretty good movie about baseball’s worst hour, the 1919 World Series Fix. Great ending!
7.
Little Big League...Highly unlikely, yet makes the viewer realize how much fun baseball is.
6.
Bull Durham...Possibly the most accurate depiction of what life is like for a ballplayer.
5.
Major League...The funniest baseball movie ever. Charlie Sheen is great as “Wild Thing.”
4.
The Sandlot...Sure to make everyone remember what is fun about baseball. “You play ball like a girl!”
3.
A League of Their Own...”There’s no crying in baseball!”
2.
The Natural...A classic; the homerun into the lights is one of the great scenes of all time.
1.
Field of Dreams...Kevin Costner playing catch with his dad will make anyone realize why baseball is America’s pasttime.
