Do you know your permanent record?

Dora Taylor, Charger Staff

Ever heard of a permanent record? Most people think crimes and various disciplinary violations are what fill their permanent record. This is a common mistake. Even if you know what a permanent record is, do you know what it’s purpose is? And who in the world wants to see it anyway?

A permanent record traces your scholastic career from the good ol’ days as a freshman until your final days as senior. Every final grade in every class you have ever taken is printed on your permanent record.

All you seniors who remember the ACT and the SAT....guess what... those lovely scores are also clearly displayed on this record.

But probably most important for students applying for college is the fact that your final G.P.A. and class ranking are included on your permanent record.

Although your record is confidential, many people have to check it out. Colleges require a copy of your high school transcript (a.k.a. permanent record) when you apply for enrollment and scholarships. If you decide to join the military, they want to see your record, too.

If you plan on going into the workforce, most jobs want to see your high school diploma, and your record verifies your diploma. Don’t fret though -not just anybody can see your record.

Anyone besides yourself, your parents, or school officials must have written permission from you and your parents before viewing your record.

As it turns out, a permanent record is a fairly imperative piece of information. Those few times when you’ve gotten out of class for a credit check, you weren’t just getting out of class, you were viewing your permanent record.

So, the next time you go see your counselor, remember how much work he or she does on your PERMANENT RECORD.
