B-ball teams showing stength as season progresses

Daniel “Spud” Flatt, Charger Staff

With the return of the bitter cold days of winter we see an immigration to the valley of the hardwood where our Cavaliers in polyester armor battle it out against the beasts of District 7.

This year both teams seem to be making a name for themselves in the district. Both the men’s and women’s teams have winning records overall and in the district.

With a record of thirteen wins and only four losses, the Lady Cavaliers show great potential going into the later part of the season.

After recently defeating the Lady Patriots of Oakland and powerhouse Riverdale, the Lady Cavs have gained a respect from critics.

So far the girls have posted an outstanding record of six wins and no losses in the well-respected District 7.
The Lady Cavaliers are now ranked number one in the district ahead of the number two team, Riverdale, and the number three team, White County.Senior Ashley Taylor says, “I love this group of girls. The camaraderie of this team has brought us much success. I foresee much more (success) to come in the season.”

Coach Mindy Odom has high hopes for the her group of girls.

“Our major goal this year is to go undefeated in the district,” Coach Odom says, “and to do well in the district and state tournaments.”

Our men’s team has been opening a few eyes also. Coming into the season, the Cavaliers were not thought of as a premier team of the District 7 AAA. At the halfway point in the season, the men show a hard-earned record of twelve wins and five losses including a district record of three wins and two losses. Their record has helped them gain a respectable reputation in the district.

With the easy half of the season over, senior Mario Burnette said, “We’ve got a tough schedule ahead - we’ve got to pull it together and get it going.” Mario thinks that the team will keep improving as the season goes on.

Our Cavalier teams have six games left in the regular season. With four of the six games left at home come out and support our “heroes of the hardwood” as they finish off their season.

The District Tournament starts February 24 at Blackman High School. Look for both teams to make a statement in the post season tournaments this year.
