CHS Beta Club working to make a difference

Leigh Ivey, Editor-in-Chief

This Valentine’s Day, while love is in the air, one club at Cookeville High School will be working to make a difference throughout the world, giving a new meaning to the phrase, “What the world needs now is love, sweet love.”

During the week of February 10-14, CHS Beta Club, sponsored by Jan Presley, Brian Miesch, and Judy Schinbeckler, will be taking donations for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

During all three lunches, volunteers from Beta will be accepting donations, small and large, in the commons area.

St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital is the first institution of its kind with the sole purpose of conducting basic and clinical research. It is also the largest childhood cancer research center in the world in terms of number of patients enrolled in studies.

The hospital asks for clubs like Beta to collect donations in order to provide help for families without insurance or in financial trouble.

ALSAC, the fund-raising arm of St. Jude’s, is in charge of covering all costs not covered by insurance.
During the past five years, eighty-six percent of dollar collected for ALSAC has gone to the current or future needs of the hospital.

Cookeville High’s Beta club chose to work as part of the ALSAC team because, as sergeant-in-arms Madyson Burgess says, “It’s a great opportunity to help others around the world and show that everyone can make a difference in the world.”

One hundred percent of the money donated to Cookeville High’s Beta Club will go to the St. Jude’s hospital.

This Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to have a heart and make a contribution to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
