Why is V-day all about love?

Bailey Garrett, Charger Staff

It’s that time of year again. Yes, you know when love is in the air, and there are hearts of all sizes everywhere you look.

For those who have that significant other whom they deeply care about, Valentine’s Day can be the most wonderful day of the year.

For those of us, however, who have not found that person, the holiday is one for stuffing your face with chocolate and watching Sleepless in Seattle over and over again.

On February 14th every year, millions of people across the world are allowed that moment to spend with someone they truly care about.

More flowers are bought for delivery on this day more than any other. I am willing to bet that stores are completely out of teddy bears, and Russell Stovers is even running low on the chocolate.

Valentine’s Day is a day to show the people that you love how much you care about them whether its by making them a card or buying them a dozen roses; love can be shown in all shapes and fashions.

Have you ever wondered what Valentine’s Day is like for other people? I mean, not everyone is lucky enough to have someone with whom to share February 14th, and maybe some of us don’t really want to.

If you are lucky to have that significant other, along with Valentine’s Day comes that pressure: did I get enough presents for him? Did I spend enough money? Did I spend too much money? Do I have something in my teeth?

But, you know the old saying, singles have more fun (Okay so maybe it doesn’t go exactly like that, but it could!).
Maybe sitting on the couch, eating tons of those little sugary hearts isn’t exactly a blast, but you can make it a blast.
Valentine’s Day is what you make it. If you want to sit around your house drowning your sorrows in chocolate and movie marathons, then that is what it will be.

If you want to make it into (like one of my nameless best friends) a great day by wearing red, then go ahead.
You can make February 14th whatever you want it to be, like those sometimes annoying Words of Wisdom, “The choice is yours.”

This year, even though the thought of watching another sappy movie or eating another piece of caramel-filled milk chocolate makes me sick, I have come to the realization that February 14th can be a great day or it can be a bad one, but I am going to take the advice of my friend and just make it a great day to wear red (or pink).

So on Valentine’s Day, even though I will more than likely not be receiving roses or even a card from a significant other, I can still show my family and friends how much I care about them.

Although Valentine’s Day is a holiday of love, love is not only shared between two people who are attracted to each other, but love is shared between family and friends.
