While driving through the student parking lot, I hear various types of music
jamming through car stereos. All different styles from country to rap and so
on. To say the least our student body has an eclectic taste in tunes.
Music says something about your personality. I think the lyrics of songs reflect
the thoughts that run through your mind. Some people have told me that they
just like the sound of a song and dont necessarily listen to the lyrics,
but that doesnt seem possible. You hear the words, and they remain in
your mind whether you realize it or not. An average person can memorize up to
seventy songs.
How important is music to us? Anytime I have gotten in a car, music is always
playing. If you go shopping, music that reflects the stores image is playing
in the background.
M.T.V. (Music Television) is a highly popular show among high school students.
Music of each generation is a direct reflection of the era.
When you think about the 70s, what immediately comes to your mind? Disco? Their
music was portrayed through their platform shoes and polyester clothing.
The 80s were full of big hair bands and the influence it had on that generation
is obvious. Guys and girls with big hair, spandex, and cut off sweatshirts saturated
the schools.
What will people say about our generation with the music that tops our charts?
When I think about some of the music that is coming out and topping the charts,
I get a little nervous. Inappropriate slang words fill the songs, so much that
many artists cut two C.Ds--edited and unedtied.
How many songs are aired on the radio that deal with sex from a distorted view-point?
I heard a song this moring by Destinys Child Jumpin Jumpin,
telling girls to go out to find guys with fat wallets, while leaving their boyfriends
at home and encouraging guys to leave their girlfriends at home while hitting
the clubs to be with other girls. Some music reflects the lack of committment
our generation has.
Music is so varied. So much good music is being recorded but not being found.
I am not attempting to tell you what to listen to or not to listen to. I just have one question you might think about. What does your music say about you?
