David Epley, Charger Staff
The smell of wet freshly cut grass, the dewey air, and beautiful nature...
wait a second, how about the smell of green asphault, tanned shoulders baking
in the hot afternoon, the roar of the crowd safely behind a chain-linked fence,
and a new set of Penn tennis balls. Yes, you have guessed it (if the headline
wasnt obvious enough), its tennis time at CHS!
First, lets talk about the mens tennis program, coached by the experienced
Karen Brooks. Although three of their top six from last year have either moved
or graduated, the mens tennis team is looking better than ever. They have
an outstanding chance of making a berth into Regional play and more than likely
they will be taking names at sub-state and state. One might ask, Where
did these guys come from? Most people do not realize that the mens
tennis team has been one of the most succesful programs in the history of CHS.
Last year, the men made it to sub-state, and two years before that, they made
it all the way to state. This year, the team has three seniors who will be blazing
the asphault and sometimes clay path to victory: Ryan Alison, Jim Enochs, and
Jon Bellar. Conditioning started in January, and the season kicks off in March.
Venus,
Serena, Anna - if you thought thought those girls could slam a ball, you have
no idea. The CHS girls tennis program is back and swinging for another succesful
year in the state. As soon as they were back from their restful Christmas break,
these vollying vixens were in the gym running, benching, squatting, and doing
those crazy agility drills. These girls are focused and serious about their
tennis.
Let me give you a short update on Wendy Tarvers girls. The girls lost
two of their top three from last year, but according to the players, they are
stronger than ever. This can be attribued to the depth of the team. This year,
they over twenty girls try out for the team. They have not 1, 2, 3 or 4, but
8 seniors leading the team. Not only that but they will have several on the
JV team. Everyone should come out and support the girls in March!
As the season heats up, the tennis teams need as much support from the school as possible. Not including tournaments, both teams will be playing, on average, twice a week. So if you enjoy sitting down on those comfortable bleachers, cracking open a cold beverage, and sporting your finest Cav colors, I suggest that you head on down to the courts and support one of CHSs finest programs, tennis.
