Star-studded award show season arrives

Award show season is here! The much anticipated star-studded events seem to be happening constantly. From the American music Awards, to the Golden Globes, to the People’s Choice Awards, and the prominent Grammys and Academy Awards, The Charger is your source for the nominees, eventful reviews of the shows, and, yes, even the coveted winners. We have decided that Cookeville High School needed some entertainment gurus, so we (Emilee and Bailey) have happily volunteered to fill that void.

The American Music Awards kicked off the season with a successful show. Unfortunately, the awards had to compete with the primetime re-run of Michael Jackson’s 30th Anniversary Tour. Although nothing much can compete with an audience of Elizabeth Taylor, Muchaully Caulkin , and O-Town, the AMAs held their own. They even presented the Artist of the Century Award to the King of Pop. Tim McGraw and Destiny’s Child both walked away with two AMA’s. Alicia Keys won two awards for New Artist after being nominated for six. The late Aaliyah won two AMAs including Favorite Soul/ Rythym & Blues Album and Favorite Female Soul & Rythym Artist. U2 went home with the Internet Artist of the Year Award beating Destiny’s Child, Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson, Tim McGraw, and Shaggy.

The second show of the year was also a success. The People’s Choice Awards is the one awards program in Hollywood that is completely decided by the people. Fans call in their favorite movies, music, and TV shows to decide the nominees, and then fans go online to vote for the winners. The winners this year included Days of Our Lives for Favorite Daytime Show and Julia Roberts for Favorite Actress in a musical or Comedy for her performance in America’s Sweethearts. Friends took home the award for the Favorite TV Show-Musical or Comedy winning over Ally McBeal.

The most prestigious of the shows that have taken place so far is the Golden Globes. Winners of this coveted award include Band of Brothers for Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture made for Television, and Judy Davis took home the best actress in a Movie Made for Television for her role in Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows, and James Franco took home the best actor award for James Dean. Rachel Griffiths defeated Friends star Jennifer Aniston and West Wing star Allison Janey for Best Performance by an Actress in a supporting role in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. Nicole Kidman brought home a Golden Globe for her part in Moulin Rouge, and Russel Crowe added yet another award to his collection for his role in A Beautiful Mind. In the stiff competition for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture “Until” by Sting from the movie Kate & Leopold beat out "Come What May" for Moulin Rouge and “There You’ll Be” sung by Faith Hill from Pearl Harbor.

For the latest news on the finale of award show season including a complete wrap-up of the Grammys and the Academy Awards tune into the next issue of The Charger .
