CHS wrestling team on the move

Doug Hensley and Brandon Grissom, Charger Staff

We recently had the chance to talk with Cookeville’s outstanding wrestling coach, Scott Cook, after an impressive victory over Mcminn Central, in which the outcome was 76 to 6 in our favor.

We found that he talked candidly on a subject that is obviously important to him, wrestling.

When asked how this year’s team compares to the team from last year, Cook said, “We’re a lot stronger this year, with nine returning state qualifiers. It’s a good team. We have six returning senior members.”

The senior members this year are Paco Martinez, David Hobbs, Darnell Gammon, Joe Hill, Bill Ferrell, and Kevin McCaleb.

Coach Cook also added, “We have a good team. There are about forty-five kids and few quitters. I am very impressed. We have a strong freshman team. They look great. ”

The team has several fundraisers throughout the year. Cook said, “The spaghetti supper went well, and there is also an upcoming in-school match scheduled for January.”

The team roster is Alonzo Alcantera, Alonzo Alvarez, Matt Bates, Brent Beechboard, Kayla Boaz, Daniel Boyce, Randy Brewington, Justin Davis, Amber Dixon, Matt Duff, Toby Farley, Jacob Fisk, Grady Garrett, Farraz Hussain, Brain Jones, Braedon Julian, Dusty Keagle, Corey Masters, Matt Mateyka, Denny Maynard, Aaron McDermott, Bobby O’brien, Hailey Proctor, Justin Proctor, Chris Randolph, Tyler Reeder, Matt Riddle, Chad Robinson, Greg Rogers, B.J. Sullivan, Tyler Swindell, Charles Taylor, Ricky Turnage, Sammy Turner, and Chris Zuller.

Their last home meet is scheduled Jan. 23 against Cumberland County at 4:30.

Please come and support our Cookeville wrestling team.
