Inspiration and athletics, the swim team
Wes Garner, Charger Staff
If we were fish and fish were we, the CHS swim team would
be the fastest in the sea.
I figured that this little poem would be a nice representation
of what we can be expecting of the CHS swim team.
Our swimmers are ready and set for this season, with not only a
fresh catch of athletes, but a fresh coaching staff.
Coaches Terry and Deidre Scott have taken up the position left
by Coach Tennant.
Although Scott has not had any coaching history, his wife has been
coaching for quite some time.
Before the couple moved to Cookeville, Deidre had been coaching
where they lived in New England. Before that, she also swam at Keuka
College which, at that time, was at that time a private womens
college.
Both Coach Scott and Coach Scott (pretty neat huh?!) are very excited
about starting this season. Even though anxiety is present, Coach
Terry Scott explains it as ...always [being] apprehensive
the first time around.
Even so, this tension is speedily loosening. Just since the first
meet, they have seen great improvement among the older and especially
the younger swimmers.
The athletes thus far have shown great ability because of their
work ethic and their attentiveness.
The team is made mostly of sophmores and freshmen and their quick
improvement is a sign of their potential. The team is not only young
because of these newcomers, but because of the loss of seniors.
There are only five seniors on the team, and none of them are female.
These seniors are Jason Baert, Orin Christianson, Jonathan Jacoby,
Brandon Pruett, and Matt Stone. Juniors Sue and Vee Donavan have
become the leaders for the girls and have taken this position with
great ferver.
The team has been improving daily and has been showing promising
prospects.
Even though they lost against Riverdale at the first meet, they
had promising times and placements.
Despite the young competitors and coaches there is one assitant
to the team who has been there from the beginning.
Coach Sheila Stubbs has been associated with the organization from
the very beginning.
With all of her experience from swimming in high school to leading
our YMCA team, she has been very impressed with the team so far.
Even though they have lost around eight seniors from last year,
she expects the team to do well this season and even better in the
future.
Though the team will be facing much more experienced teams, expect
much from
