Get with the program

Kathleen Robles, Charger Staff

“I broke the motherboard and the fatherboard too.”

Have you seen that commercial? I would bet you have. Do you even know what a motherboard is?

Basically it’s the heart of a computer, the object whose sole purpose is to keep your computer going.

You might overhear someone giggling to someone else about how his burner is faster then the other’s. Some of you automatically think, “Geez, what a computer geek!” Or some of you may even be thinking, “I wonder what a burner is...”No joke! Some people still don’t know how to use email! As a webmistress, a female running an Internet webpage, I even know about HTML.

Hyper Text Markup Language, HTML, the basic page making code, is also an enigma to many. It’s a lot of work to get those little pictures and flashing words to show up on the Internet pages when you surf.

As technology expands, the choices and skills to use it will increasingly be in demand. Now I’m not saying you should hop on the bandwagon with your keyboard and mouse, but do at least try to learn a little bit more about a computer than the simple Windows 9X or Macintosh programs.

You might even look at the brands and performance or consumer reports before buying the first thing that you see on the shelf, whether it’s a Dell or a Compaq.

Try new computers and programs. Spread those technological wings. Don’t limit yourself out of fear or inexperience.

Technology isn’t leaving, so you’d better get used to it.
