Amazons on campus: what’s the deal with heels?

Senka Hadzimuratovic, Charger Staff

“If you’ve got it, flaunt it,” some say about being tall. Ha! I’m 5’11’’, and I can count on one hand the times this has been advantageous -- concerts and the like.

When else could my head sticking out of a crowd be a good thing? I don’t “have it.” Most of the time, I can’t stand it.

“Do you play basketball?” “No.” “Oh my gosh, what a waste! You should!” So I gave that a try. Two years of league basketball proved to everybody that height means nothing when you’ve got no skills on the court.

“You’re so tall. Are you a model?” Are you kidding? Ask me again the day I befriend an eating disorder and lose every inch of fat on my body.

And since the WNBA nor the runway in Paris are options for me, I have yet to find a permanent advantage to being this tall.

So the day I wear shoes that make me half a foot taller (Halloween incidents excluded) will be the day I voluntarily choose to dissociate from society by trying to pretend that “I’ve got it.”
