Holiday commercials put viewers in a jolly mood
Kristie Powell, Charger Staff
They influence your decisions, frustrate you to tears, and make
you reflect on life itself. Christmas commercials are a true sign
of the holiday season. If you want to find meaning during those
hectic holidays, the truth behind life, and why everyone got a pair
of those awful corduroys, these forty second intervals will change
you.
Consider the Kraft cheese commercial, where the little girl wakes
up on Christmas Day to find her whole den exploding with presents
because she left out cheese instead of cookies for Santa. This commercial
can be summed up in these five little words, Ah, the power
of cheese. Imagine how many hopeful boys and girls will set
cheese out for Santa hoping for a multitude of presents. The questions
this lone commercial asks are mind boggling. How much cheese should
be left out? Is it okay to use an off brand? How much cheese would
I have to leave out in order to get that jet black 2002 Mustang
with the leather interior? When I think of symbolism in TV, immediately
the M&M commercial comes to mind. The innocent yellow one with
faith like a child and the cynical, unbelieving red one, yet leaving
out M&Ms for Ol Saint Nick. Imagine Reds surprise
when he witnesses Santa Claus himself laying out their Christmas
presents.
Who could forget the Coca-Cola commercial with those adorable polar
bears? If you are looking for a greater truth in life, look no further
than here, my friend. This commercial teaches generosity and the
value of spending time with your family. I know that I get teary
eyed when I see the baby polar bear overcome his fear of the icy
embankment, and with the help of his Coca-Cola, cross the treacherous
waters to be with his family.
Christmas commercials are much more than a holiday headache. The
next time ER is on a commercial break, dont skip through the
channels searching for another show. Instead, watch and reflect
on the Christmas commercials. In them, you will find the true meaning
of the holiday season.
