Wrestling: harder than you think

Elena Vasquez, Charger Staff

CHS has had wrestling for 4 years now. In its fourth year the wrestling team has earned a good reputation. They have even played with New York in one of the matches.

So far they are having some rough times with the winning strike, but they’ll get on their feet and back again to do what they do best.

I went to see them practice and was stunned at how they have to practice at least 3 hours.

They may have trouble at first having lost to New York; although this loss may seem like they’ll never recover, we have a great team. They will do it! They will succeed!

This year’s 38-member team has many new faces, and only one wrestler has been on for the four years of the team’s existence: Kristi Sweat.

All of the team members voted for the four captains, who are now Nicholas Martinez, Kristy Sweat, Joe Hill, and David Hock.
CHS also has a diversity of nationalities : Guatamalen Nicholas Martinez (as known as Paco), Brazilian Luciano Zanforlin, Swedish Martin Wahlestedt and Bosnian wrestler, Adel Magelic.

The Brazilian wrestler said that wrestling is similar to Gideon in Brazil.

Currently, there are three girls on the team. This is also the first year that more girls have tried out for wrestling. The guys, at first, had doubts of having girls on the team. Kristi, with many other girls, have shown the boys that they can do it, too. Now the guys don’t seem to mind having girls on the team, but this doesn’t mean that they have to be softies with them.

I respect all those who are on the wrestling team. The community has also given their full support to the team of CHS wrestlers.
Here at CHS do we not only have good wrestlers but that they have been doing an excellent job with the matches.

The wrestling team has also played in matches against Mean Center and Lookout Valley. They have defeated both these teams.
Coach Scott Cook has said that the team has potential to beat their opponents.

Many freshmen tried out this year. The freshmen at first get beat up pretty badly, This is somewhat hard for them because this is something new which takes time and effort getting used to.

By the middle of the season the freshmen will have made improvements on their plays.

”If they try or make an effort and discipline themselves, they will make the team,” Coach Cook said.

We can’t forget the managers of the wrestling team;these are we are Kasey Goolsby and Kori Richardson.

So what are the goals for the team for this year?

Joe Hill (Junior ) said, “To make it in the top ten state.” B.J. Sullivan said the same.

As for the diet of the wrestlers, their motto is “Eat less and run more.” Exercise and discipline are what the team must do if they want to be successful with in the matches.

Freshman Charles Taylor said, “It is awesome, never give up no matter how hard it is.”
David Hobbies, another freshman, said, “Hopefully I’ll win all of mine!”

If you’re looking for a different sports experience or want to support another of CHS’s fine athletic teams, check out the next wrestling match. The coaches and team would love to fill the stands and you just might become a fan of this exciting new addition to CHS sports.
