Red, White, and Blue Tribute at CHS

Dan Norse, Guest Writer

What was red, white, and blue all over? On tuesday, November 13, the answer to that question would have been Cookeville High School or more specifically the annual CHS celebration honoring veterans.

An almost capacity crowd filled the CHS auditorium for a moving, patriotic program. Social Studies teacher, Darlene Hatcher, who was in charge of organizing the program said, "I was really impressed with the crowd."

Coach Jerry Joslin offered this review: "I thought it was awesome. The time and effort involved produced a beautiful result. I was moved to tears."

Rachel Hunter served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. Our JROTC cadets opened the program with the posting of the colors followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Hunter, and the National Anthem performed by the CHS Band and Chorus.

One of the high points of the evening was the performance of Airman Reggie Coleman. Coleman sand a moving rendition of "God Bless the USA" the Lee Greenwood standard which has enjoyed renewed popularity in the wake of September 11.

"I think this part of the program is a wonderful opportunity for students to see their teachers n a different light," said Hatcher.

Many CHS clubs and organizations also had a hand in making the program memorable for everyone. These groups include the CHS PTSO, Leo Club, HOSA, History Club, Bible Club, Spanish Honor Society, Beta Club, Key Club, Interact Club, Tennessee Tomorrow, Sisters in Christ, the Lady Cav basketball team, Student Congress, and the production staff of Recently.

Following the program, the crowd enjoyed a reception in the commons area providing an opportunity for students to talk with some of our honored guests. Students had a chance to ask questions about the veterans' experiences and learn of their many sacrifices for freedom.

Many students used this time as an opportunity to say "thank you" to the veterans for their service and contributions to the preservation of freedom. It was a touching end to a wonderful, patriotic, and spirited evening.
