Serving as the only runner from Cookeville, Cookeville High School student, Devin Baranowski was chosen to run the torch through Nashville for the Winter Olympics 2002, which will be held in Salt Lake City.

Her mother nominated her for this opportunity through Coca-Cola on an application on the internet.

Devin was notified through email that she was a possible candidate for running the torch. The applications were narrowed down and she found out at the end of August that she was chosen.

Each runner had a specific uniform that they wore while running. This consisted of a wind suit, a long-sleeved t-shirt and a fleece hat and gloves that each runner got to keep for memorabilia. The uniform also had to be worn a specific way.

Devin passed the torch to her mother. Her mother also got the opportunity to run because she nominated Devin. The torch passed run through Nashville on Dec. 16. Devin ran at 7:07 a.m.

“I am glad I got to experience something not everyone has a chance to do,” says Devin.
