Track is back and running with the pack
Wes Garner, Charger Staff
Track is definitely off to a running start as the team continues
the race till end of the season. For a while it seemed as though
the athletes were never going to be able to get outside because
of the random weather changes, but they are finally out and ready
to continue.
Coaches Bill Wrasman (boys) and Terry Scott (girls) are very proud
of this year’s team and are expecting them to press forward
with the same effort that they have always had. Both coaches note
that from the first two meets they have shown much improvement and
are expected to continue to improve with each meet.
The boys group is lead by seniors Justin Birdwell, Mark Dean, Spud
Flatt, Jesse Dalton, Aaron Fields, Brandon Grizzard, Neal Jackson,
James Lane, and Jake Standifer. The girls are led by seniors Dana
Johnson, Rachael Crook, Ashley Brady, Amy Byrne, and Nikki Hartford.
The first year seniors are Candace Lanier and Andrea Fleetwood.
Despite an upset in the first meet with no first places taken in
track, the field events had an excellent showing with Amy Byrne
taking first in shot-put, Mark Dean taking first in discus, and
Ashley Brady taking first in the high jump. The second competition
showed great improvement from the men’s team. Taking first
were James Lane in the 200, Neal Jackson in the 400, Jesse Dalton
in the 800, Spud Flatt in the mile, and Justin Birdwell in the 2
mile. The men’s 4x100 relay team took first at the second
meet.
Senior Spud Flatt said, “With a month left in the season,
I look forward to seeing some great personal records from our athletes.”
The women have much to show also with lead scorers such as Nikki
Hartford, Danny Day, Shawna Lee, Amanda Allen, Ashley Brady, and
Dana Johnson in sprinting. Catherine Lynn, Molly Sasser, Rachael
Crook, and Karen Mcbroom have dominated in middle distance. Highligting
the long distance are Emily Earls, Sara Kmet, and Amanda Lollar. With
steady improvement, the track
teams are well on their way to a
winning
season.
